Lancashire cricket manager Mike Watkinson has revealed that optimism is high at Old Trafford ahead of the new season which starts next week. Lancashire, who have failed to win the outright County Championship title since 1934, open their campaign against Surrey on Wednesday at The Oval. And Watkinson told BBC Radio Lancashire: "Our thoughts are let's get some points on the board early on. "It's been a good pre-season for us so let's hope we can carry on." | If Francois du Plessis gives us an extra edge and pushes the bar up then that'll be good for us |
South African batsman Francois du Plessis is due to arrive at Old Trafford in the next few weeks. Watkinson believes the 23-year-old, who will not count as an overseas player as he signed under the controversial Kolpak ruling, will provide some much needed strength to the side. "He's a young batsman who has performed well this winter. He's highly-rated and will bring some extra depth to our batting line-up. "He is an excellent fielder and is an ambitious young cricketer. He only comes for six months, but he will be wanting to perform well and show what he can do. "If he gives us an extra edge and pushes the bar up then that'll be good for us."
