Jones's performances at Kent will be monitored by Somerset |
Kent have signed Somerset seam bowler Steffan Jones on a month-long loan. The 35-year-old ex-Derbys and Northants man will boost a Kent attack depleted by Stuart Clark's Australian call-up and Ryan McClaren's IPL absence. In addition, Amjad Khan is injured and there is concern over the fitness of three more players, Martin Saggers, Simon Cook and Robbie Joseph. "We are delighted to have secured a player as experienced as Steffan," said Kent chief executive Paul Millman. "We are extremely grateful to Somerset for their help in making this loan signing possible." Jones, 35, looks set to make his debut against his former county Northants in Tuesday's County Championship Division Two opener at Canterbury. Somerset do have the option of being able to recall the former rugby-playing Welshman. But Jones has not figured in the first team so far this season and Somerset director of cricket Brian Rose was happy to let him go out on loan to Division Two Kent. Rose told the club website: "Kent have some injury problems and approached us to see if we had anyone suitable to help. "We recommended Steffan and he was very eager to go. It is much better for him to be playing first-team cricket than to be confined to our second XI."
