Ireland lost by five wickets against Afghanistan in Guyana on Wednesday in their final warm-up game ahead of the ICC World Twenty20. John Mooney top-scored with 42 from 33 balls while Gary Wilson added 32 as the Irish posted a modest 133-9. A 66-run stand in just six overs between Asghar Stanikzai and Mohammed Nabi helped Afghanistan to reach the target with three balls to spare. Ireland take on the West Indies in the ICC World Twenty20 opener on Friday. Afghanistan, who are making their debut in a major ICC tournament, face India in their first match on Saturday. The Irish were struggling at 32-7 before Wilson and Mooney put on a much-needed partnership of 79. Trent Johnson (16) and Niall O'Brien (14) were the only other batsmen to get into double figures. Dawat Ahmadzai inflicted the most damage, taking four of the first five Irish wickets. Ireland were favourites for victory when they reduced Afghanistan to 71-4 with just six overs remaining. But late fireworks from Stanikazi and Nabi took the Afghans to the brink of victory, with the latter falling to Alex Cusack with just two runs needed. George Dockrell took 2-23 while Johnston was the most economical of the Irish bowlers with 1-14 from his four overs.
