Niall O'Brien produced an impressive innings for Ireland |
Ireland produced another creditable display as they were beaten by 18 runs by a West Indies XI in a World Twenty20 warm-up clash in Jamaica. Shivnarine Chanderpaul top-scored for the Windies with 64 as they posted 171-7 in their 20 overs while Wavell Hinds contributed 45 at Sabina Park. Niall O'Brien's 62 from 44 balls and Paul Stirling's 33 kept Ireland in with a chance for much of their innings. However, the loss of the duo halted Irish momentum as the Windies held on. Alex Cusack took three West Indies wickets while Gary Kidd, Kevin O'Brien and Peter Connell also claimed dismissals. In reply, Irish skipper William Porterfield and Paul Stirling put on 38 for the first wicket before the captain's dismissal for 17 in the fifth over. Ireland had reached 77 by the ninth over when Stirling was run out. The runs then began to slow and the visitors' last realistic chance of victory went when O'Brien was caught for 62 by Ramnaresh Sarwan off Sulieman Benn's bowling at the start of the 18th over to leave the score was 137-4. O'Brien hammered two sixes and seven fours in his 62 from 46 balls.
