Boyd Rankin will spearhead Ireland's attack in the World Twenty20 |
Boyd Rankin has been named in Ireland's squad for the ICC World Twenty20 in the Caribbean after recovering from injury. The Warwickshire fast bowler missed Ireland's successful qualifying campaign in the UAE last month because of a foot injury. Captain William Porterfield, Trent Johnston and brothers Niall and Kevin O'Brien are among the familiar names in the 15-man squad. It also includes teenagers Paul Stirling and George Dockrell. Rankin is added to the 14 who helped Ireland reach the final in the UAE and therefore book a place for the World Twenty20 alongside fellow qualifiers Afghanistan. The 25-year-old is one of a clutch of players who have figured in both Ireland's World Cup campaign in the Caribbean three years ago and the World Twenty20 in England last summer. "He was always going to come back for us once he was fit, so it's an added bonus for us that he is," said Ireland coach Phil Simmons. "He seems all right. It is just about how much bowling he has managed to do on that tour with Warwickshire and how ready he is. We will find that out later this week." Ireland will depart on 1 April for a tour of Jamaica before their Twenty20 group matches against the West Indies and England in Guyana. The Irish face the hosts on 30 April before taking on England on 4 May. Meanwhile, Cricket Ireland has announced that RSA Insurance has expanded its sponsorship of the Ireland senior team in 2010 with an added investment of 100,000 euros.
