Glamorgan's hopes of signing South African batsman Richard Levi have been dashed after his team Cape Cobras refused him permission to leave. The Welsh county wanted the 23-year-old for the entire season to join fellow Springbok and new captain Alviro Petersen. Glamorgan are still trying to bring in veteran international bowler Charl Langeveldt. The ex-Derbyshire fast bowler, 36, could sign as a Kolpak player. Langeveldt, who can swing the ball at genuine pace, has played six Tests but played his last one-day international for South Africa in their defeat to Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in October. He has an impressive bowling average of 29.62 runs in 72 one-day internationals. And BBC Sport understands Glamorgan want the experienced international to to line-up alongside batsman Mark Cosgrove to boost their Twenty20 campaign. Cape Cobras team-mate Levi, meanwhile, was wanted to strengthen Glamorgan's weakened middle-order following the controversial departures of Tom Maynard and deposed skipper Jamie Dalrymple. Levi, who has played 33 first class averaging 40, has already played cricket in Wales with local league side Abergavenny. Glamorgan have re-signed batsman Michael O'Shea and recently announced Australian-born all-rounder Jim Allenby has signed a new contract. Dalrymple and coach Matthew Maynard left in a winter of discontent at Glamorgan as new head of coaching Colin Metson and new coach Matthew Mott will bid to improve the county in 40-over and Twenty20 cricket.
