Kaneria could be part of Pakistan's touring squad next summer

Essex are exploring the possibility of signing a second overseas player as cover for Danish Kaneria next season.

The Pakistan leg-spin bowler may be on international duty for up to half of next summer.

Chief executive David East told BBC Essex: "We are contracted to get Danish Kaneria back next year.

"There's a question mark over how much of the time Danish will be available, in which case we are keeping our eyes open over who might replace him."

Kaneria has played for Essex in five of the past six seasons, but is expected to be part of Pakistan's tour of England, which starts in late June 2010.

East added that so far Essex have struggled to find English-qualified players that would improve the quality of their squad.

"Nothing really has captured our imagination in terms of a player who would add value to our side," he admitted.

"You can bolster a side as much as you want, but you've actually got to see a meaningful improvement over what you've already got.

"At the moment we haven't really been able to demonstrate that in terms of the players that have been offered to us."
