Harker lifts lid on Durham future

Durham chief executive David Harker says the county would lend its support to a domestic Twenty20 competition based on the Indian Premier League.

The county champions have struggled in the 20-over format but Harker realises the potential of being involved in such a lucrative competition.

"People are aware of the IPL," Harker told BBC Look North.

"If a different sort of T20 is going to be a future of English cricket then Durham needs to be a part of that."

As well as ambitious plans to grow the county's involvement in the 20-over game, Durham have further plans to utilise the capacity of their Riverside home, a current Test venue.

Redevelopment of the site will be an expensive undertaking for the county, and Harker believes one way of adding to their capital in the future would be to introduce a share issue.

"Ultimately that would be something that would be interesting," Harker said.

"There's a lot of work to be done before we ever get to that stage, but to give the community the opportunity to have a stake in this business, when it is fully developed, it's something in the front of our minds."
