Harker thinks the IPL is one of the top sporting events in the world

Durham chief executive David Harker has expressed his interest in bringing the Indian Premier League to the North East if the event takes place in England.

The IPL are considering England as a potential venue amid security fears in India and Harker is keen to attract interest in games at the Riverside.

"We'll certainly be in the hat," he told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"It's one of the world's major sporting events, a huge event and to have it in the North East would be fantastic."

The Riverside ground has staged Test, one-day and Twenty20 cricket for England matches, and plans are in place to expand the capacity to 20,000.
