LV COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Headingley: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY THREE: Yorkshire 610-6, Durham 215-4 Yorkshire 5pts, Durham 2pts Match scorecard
Di Venuto scored his 13th century for Durham |
Michael Di Venuto's fluent unbeaten century combined with the weather to frustrate Yorkshire at Headingley. Resuming on 54-3 in response to Yorkshire's mammoth first innings 610-6, Durham lost only Dale Benkenstein before the rain closed in. The former skipper was stumped by Jonny Bairstow off a turning delivery from David Wainwright for 64. But Di Venuto was relatively untroubled in going to his century off 161 balls, surviving one serious lbw appeal on 95. It was the Australian's 13th first-class century for the champions. Yorkshire overseas signing Tino Best was once again wicketless, though the West Indies fast bowler may have been unfortunate when Di Venuto shouldered arms to a delivery which swung back in to him on 95. Although plumb in front, the ball may have been going over the stumps. There was nothing in the pitch to assist Best when Di Venuto and Benkenstein resumed on 54-3. Pace soon gave way to spin as the light deteriorated, Adil Rashid being driven for four in his first over to bring Di Venuto his fifty from 82 balls. Only one wicket has fallen in the three morning sessions of the match so far, and that came when Anthony McGrath was run out on the second day. Benkenstein completed his half-century off 108 balls with 10 fours soon after lunch, before Di Venuto cruised to a century which included 14 fours. Following Benkenstein's dismissal, Ian Blackwell and Di Venuto steered Durham to their first bonus point of the match before rain stopped play with 51 overs of the day remaining. With showers also forecast for the final day, a draw is now very much the likeliest outcome.
