Jacques Rudolph hits one of his 35 boundaries in his 228no

Jacques Rudolph smashed a career-best 228 not out as Yorkshire took full control against Durham at Headingley.

After resuming on 304-2, Rudolph and Anthony McGrath (105) took the home side's third-wicket partnership to 206 before the latter was run out.

Rudolph then shared a century stand with skipper Andrew Gale (41) before Yorkshire declared on 610-6.

In reply, Adil Rashid took two wickets in two balls as Durham closed on 54-3, still 556 runs behind.

Rashid got rid of Will Smith (8) and nightwatchman Mark Davies, finishing the day with 2-6 from three overs.

Earlier, Rudolph never gave a chance in seven and three-quarter hours at the crease. And when Gale called his side in, with 18 overs of the day remaining, he had faced 389 balls, stroking 35 fours.

His previous best score was an unbeaten 222 on his Test debut for South Africa against Bangladesh seven years ago. And he beat by eight runs his previous highest knock for Yorkshire, against Warwickshire at Scarborough in his debut season of 2007.

Durham, already without several leading fast bowlers because of injuries, found themselves further handicapped when Dale Benkenstein spent long spells off the field having treatment after twisting his knee while running out McGrath.

The weary visitors used nine bowlers in a futile attempt to stem the runs, three of them conceding in excess of 100 runs.

Rudolph found support for his record-breaking knock lower down the order from Rashid, who hit six boundaries in a run-a-ball 43.
