Derby square to face north-south

Derbyshire County Cricket Club

Derbyshire are turning the square at the County Ground through 90 degrees to prevent problems of sun stopping play.

The first north-south pitches are being laid and it is hoped that the pitches will be tested during 2010.

Chief executive Keith Loring told the club website: "We don't want to be the only county playing the 'wrong way'.

"Lancashire is the only other county that currently plays in a west-east direction and they have also started work on turning their square."

Dazzling evening sunshine stopped play for the first time in June 2006 and several games were affected in 2007.

The work to realign the square is likely to cost more than £100,000.
