Former England star Udal loving life with Berkshire

Former England off-spinner Shaun Udal says he is enjoying his time with Berkshire and is impressed with the standard of Minor Counties cricket.

Udal took five wickets as Berkshire beat Lincolnshire by 32 runs in the MCCA Knock-Out Cup.

Udal told BBC Berkshire: "I've been surprised by how high the standard is.

"The environment we have at Berkshire, led by Bjorn Mordt, is outstanding. It's been relaxing but when it comes to cricket, you switch on."

Udal, who played more than 300 first class matches for England, Hampshire and Middlesex, said he had not found it difficult to step down a level.

"I've always had a deep love for cricket and even when I wasn't playing for Hampshire or Middlesex, I'd always go back and play for my club Camberley," he explained.

"You find the level you'll be playing at and you adapt accordingly. Motivation's not been a problem, the standard's been high - you come up against a lot of ex-pros - so it's not been a problem whatsoever.

He added that he is enjoying having a new challenge in cricket.

"It's quite refreshing in that you're walking into a game and you don't know anything about the guys," he said.

"Over a period of time you get to assess a player - you look at their grip and their stance and how they're batting and you work out where they're going to score.

"In first class cricket you play against the same guys year after year, so it's been refreshing to come up against some new faces."
