COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, The Oval: Surrey 380 & 206-7 dec drew with Glamorgan 273-9 Surrey 10 pts, Glamorgan 8 pts Match scorecard
Chris Schofield followed up his first innings 63 with another half century |
Glamorgan's hopes of winning promotion from Division Two were put on hold by a draw with Surrey at The Oval. When Kevin Pietersen fell for one, Surrey had slipped to 21-5, a lead of 125, and Glamorgan scented victory. But Chris Schofield (90) hit his second half-century of the game to take Surrey to 206-7 when the draw was agreed. Glamorgan, who have a nine-point lead over third-placed Worcestershire, will be promoted if they beat bottom club Derbyshire at Cardiff next week. If they fail to win, Worcestershire could take the second promotion berth if they beat champions Sussex at New Road. Fourth-placed Leicestershire still harbour slim hopes of going up and travel to meet Northants. Surrey wrapped up the Glamorgan first innings for 276 with the sixth ball of the day when Huw Waters was trapped lbw by Jade Dernbach to leave Jim Allenby unbeaten on 68. But the hosts were soon in deep trouble as James Harris (4-36) ripped through the top order. | 606: DEBATE add user name or initials here |
Tom Lancefield got a leading edge to cover and, after opening partner Jason Roy carved Waters to point, Mark Ramprakash failed to cope with some extra bounce and was caught at second slip. Captain Rory Hamitlon-Brown played all round a straight one then Pietersen, who fell for a second-ball duck in the first innings, was plumb leg before when he played across the line. It was left to Schofield, in stands of 124 with Gary Wilson (45) and 54 with Gareth Batty (32), to provide the resistance. He was stumped 10 short of what would have been a second first-class century trying to hit Jamie Dalrymple over the top and hands were shaken soon afterwards.
