Jason Roy takes evasive action as Jim Allenby drives
Surrey's Jason Roy takes evasive action as Glamorgan all-rounder Jim Allenby drives during his unbeaten 65 at The Oval

Jim Allenby hit a vital 65 not out as Glamorgan picked up two batting bonus points against Surrey at The Oval to edge closer to promotion.

Allenby came to the crease as the visitors, 72-2 overnight, slipped to 97-4 on a rain-interrupted day.

He added 87 for the fifth wicket with Tom Maynard (61), whose departure triggered a mini-collapse to 194-7.

But Allenby kept his cool to help his side reach 273-9 by the close, Stuart Meaker finishing with 5-97.

Surrey began the day very much on the front foot as Chris Tremlett had Ben Wright caught at third slip with his first ball, and seven overs later Meaker saw Jamie Dalrymple give Gareth Batty the first of three catches.

Maynard and Allenby put the home side on the back foot with their partnership to take Glamorgan to the brink of lunch at 184-4.

But they ended up heading for the interval six down as Maynard, having completed his third Championship half-century in six innings, was caught at first slip off Meaker before Chris Schofield removed Mark Wallace's middle stump five balls later.

James Harris was then given out leg before after the resumption and, when Robert Croft was eighth out, caught down the leg side to give Meaker his second five-wicket haul of the season, Glamorgan looked set to follow on.

Allenby and Dean Cosker saw off that threat, before a rain storm and a stubborn unbroken last-wicket stand of 36 between Allenby and Huw Waters which saw Glamorgan to the close.
