COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, The Oval:

Kevin Pietersen
Pietersen is making his County Championship debut for Surrey

Kevin Pietersen was out for a second-ball duck before captain Rory Hamilton-Brown rescued Surrey against promotion-chasing Glamorgan at The Oval.

Surrey were progressing serenely at 119-1 before Dean Cosker (4-40) bowled Jason Roy (69) before beating Pietersen with drift to trap him leg before.

Cosker also bowled Mark Ramprakash (40) before Hamilton-Brown hit 96 in a stand of 127 with Gary Wilson.

Hamilton-Brown also fell to Cosker as Surrey closed on day one at 324-6.

Chris Schofield ended the day unbeaten on 32 and Gareth Batty 29 not out after putting on 61 for the seventh wicket before stumps.

Fresh from Saturday's century against Sussex in the CB 40, England's selectors would have been looking for Pietersen to bat for a long time.

But those hopes were initially dashed by rain, which prevented any play before lunch, and then by Roy who followed up the 78 he made against Leicestershire a fortnight ago with an eye-catching 69 that included 13 fours.

He was dismissed charging down the wicket to Cosker, and was instantly followed back to the pavilion by Pietersen.

Ramprakash followed soon after when he was beaten in the flight by Cosker to leave Surrey 136-4.

But Hamilton-Brown batted his side back into a position of strength with some impressive strokeplay, and was well supported by Wilson.

They both fell in the space of four balls, with Mark Cosgrove getting through Wilson's defences after replacing hamstring strain victim Huw Waters, before Hamilton-Brown was stumped after dancing down the wicket to the first ball of Cosker's second spell.
