Cheshire win to overtake Cornwall

Cricket

Cheshire pulled off a stunning win in Shropshire on Tuesday to overtake Cornwall and claim the Western Division Minor Counties Championship title.

Cheshire won by five wickets to pick up 23 points, taking their total to 101, whilst Cornwall languished on 89.

Cornwall's match against Wales was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch, with both sides taking six points.

Despite leading for half of the season Cornwall were unable to end their search for a maiden championship win.

Only four overs were bowled during the Duchy's final game against Wales, with the match finally deemed a 'no result' early on Tuesday morning.

Cheshire's final day victory over Shropshire was helped by a superb spell from Adam Sydall who took 8-83 in 23.4 overs as the hosts fell to 178 all out in their second innings.

That left Cheshire with a target of 199 for victory which they duly passed in 45.3 overs.

Cheshire will now play the winners of the Eastern Division in the Minor Counties Championship final on 6-9 September.
