COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Canterbury: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Surrey 261-4 (Surrey 2pts, Kent 1pt) 28-31 August 2009
Jon Batty hit 16 fours on his way to a season's best 96 off 237 balls |
Jonathan Batty (96) and Michael Brown (88) put on 171 for the first wicket as Surrey's batsmen dominated day one at Canterbury, closing on 261-4. Amjad Khan eventually had Brown caught behind and then promptly dismissed Stewart Walters but Mark Ramprakash (41no) restored calm for the visitors. Batty was just four short of his first first-class century of the summer when caught behind off Phil Edwards. And young seamer Edwards then claimed the wicket of Usman Afzaal for just 3. With four fixtures to go after this one, Kent went into this game protecting a 17-point lead over third-placed Essex (second-placed Derbyshire are inactive this week). And Essex look on course to put the pressure on by claiming maximum points against Leicestershire at Chelmsford.
