Wayne Madsen hit an unbeaten century to steer promotion-chasing Derbyshire to a draw with Surrey at Whitgift School. After Surrey began the day on 195-3, the hosts declared their second innings on 320-4, with Mark Ramprakash unbeaten on 134 and Usman Afzaal making 85. Needing to bat out the day to avoid defeat, the visitors slumped to 30-2, losing Chris Rogers and Garry Park. But Madsen (108no) shared a stand of 90 with Greg Smith (49) as the visitors reached 232-5 when a draw was agreed. Ramprakash, 76 overnight, moved to his 108th first-class century from 150 balls with 11 fours and three sixes. He helped put on 156 for the fourth wicket with Afzaal, who was caught by Park off the bowling of Graham Wagg (3-109). Surrey declared 12 runs later on 320-4, setting the visitors 349 to win from a minimum of 77 overs, and then had Rogers caught behind by Jon Batty off Andre Nel from the first delivery of the Derbyshire second innings. Park was caught by Matthew Spriegel off the bowling of off-spinner Simon King in the last over before lunch, before Madsen and Smith came together. When Smith cut Pedro Collins to Chris Schofield at point, Wavell Hinds and Dan Redfern followed soon after to again put Derbyshire under pressure. But Freddie Klokker joined Madsen for an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 62 to ensure Derbyshire stay third in County Championship Division Two, while Surrey climb to fourth.
