Tim Groenewald took career-best figures of 6-50 to help bring Derbyshire back into the game against Surrey on day two at Whitgift School.

Beginning the day on 308-3, Surrey lost their last seven batsmen fur 46 runs, Groenewald picking up five of the wickets to fall on Friday.

Graham Wagg (2-126) took the other two, as Surrey were bowled out for 362.

Chris Rogers (80) and Greg Smith (48) then shared an unbroken stand of 122 to help Derbyshire close on 169-2.

After play was delayed until after lunch because of rain, the players were forced from the field by bad light five overs later.

But Groenewald and Wagg made up for lost time in the cloudy conditions, the former enticing Usman Afzaal (24) into a hook shot caught by Wavell Hinds at deep backward square leg.

Groenewald then trapped captain Stewart Walters lbw for 28, but no other Surrey batsman reached double figures.

Wagg bowled Matthew Spriegel, before Groenewald accounted for Chris Schofield, Jade Dernbach, Pedro Collins and Simon King.

Derbyshire then had Wayne Madsen trapped lbw by Collins for one and Garry Park caught by Walters off Collins for 15.

But, Rogers and Smith took advantage of the best batting conditions of the day to see the visitors through to the close.
