Mark Ramprakash hit an unbeaten 76 on day three to put Surrey in a strong position against Derbyshire.

Beginning the day on 169-2 at Whitgift School, Derbyshire lost captain Chris Rogers (80) early.

Graham Wagg (71) and Dan Redfern (55 not out) shared a sixth-wicket stand of 105, but the visitors were bowled out for 334, with Andre Nel taking 4-83.

Surrey then reached 195-3 at the close, Michael Brown (56) and Jon Batty (30) supporting Ramprakash, to lead by 223.

After Rogers was caught behind by Batty off the bowling of Pedro Collins (3-76) and Nel accounted for Greg Smith (54) and Wavell Hinds, Derbyshire were reduced to 185-5 and in danger of not reaching the follow-on target of 213.

But, after Freddie Klokker was bowled by Jade Dernbach (3-73), Wagg and Redfern combined to steer the visitors from danger.

Batty and Brown the shared an opening stand of 63, but when Batty was caught by Rogers off the bowling of Steffan Jones, Ramprakash dominated the rest of the day.

And, despite Brown and captain Stewart Walters falling in the space of three Graham Wagg deliveries, the former England batsman led Surrey to a commanding position at stumps.
