COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Bristol: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Gloucestershire 337-5 (Glamorgan 1pt, Glos 3pts) 31 July - 3 August 2009
Alex Gidman faced 168 deliveries for his unbeaten 122 |
An unbeaten century from captain Alex Gidman gave Gloucestershire the upper hand on day one against Glamorgan at Nevil Road. Gidman struck 16 fours to end the day on 122 not out and shared stands of 118 with Chris Taylor (37) and 77 with Hamish Marshall (43). Opener Kadeer Ali also made 53 while Adam Shantry picked up 2-38. The home side reached 337-5 before bad light signalled a premature close to the day's play. After Glamorgan won the toss, Rob Woodman, who was drafted in to strengthen the Gloucestershire batting, was caught behind by Mark Wallace off the bowling of Shantry for 15. Will Porterfield (22) helped Kadeer take the score to 86 before being caught by James Dalrymple off James Harris, and when Kadeer cut Shantry to Will Bragg at point, the score was 118-3. But Gidman, first with Marshall and then with Taylor, helped the visitors, who had gone three games without collecting a batting point, past the 300 mark. Marshall and Taylor fell to Garnet Kruger and Robert Croft respectively, leaving James Franklin (16 not out) to accompany Gidman to the close.
