COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, The Swalec Stadium Glamorgan 271 drew with Surrey 367 & 82-3 (Glamorgan 9pts, Surrey 11pts)
Jamie Dalrymple has now hit 403 runs in six Championship innings |
A stubborn half-century from captain Jamie Dalrymple helped Glamorgan to a draw in Cardiff on the final day of the Championship clash against Surrey. Glamorgan went into the final day on 136-4 in their first innings needing a further 83 to avoid the follow-on. But, as soon as the Welsh county had achieved that, the game was destined to be a draw, 144 overs having been lost to rain on the first two days. Glamorgan were all out for 271, Jade Dernbach finishing on 6-82. Dernbach had taken three of Glamorgan's first four wickets the previous evening to set up hopes of forcing an unlikely victory. But Glamorgan's fifth-wicket duo of Dalrymple and Ben Wright survived the crucial first hour of play well, dealing with Dernbach and Andre Nel. The introduction of Australian debutant Ryan Harris earned a breakthrough as Wright was caught behind, ending a 62-run partnership. But the Glamorgan captain was unfazed, going on to make his half-century from 114 balls as the home side ensured they would not have to bat again. After that a draw became the only realistic result but that did not stop Surrey making further inroads as Mark Butcher, in his first match for more than a year after recovering from a knee injury, took three good catches to help earn a 97-run lead on first innings. And he also got some batting practice, hitting 27 as he put on 56 with Mark Ramprakash, who added a further 35 to his first innings effort, the 105th first-class century of his career.
