Cook struck eight fours and one six in his unbeaten 84

Rain followed by an unbeaten 84 from England opener Alastair Cook stopped Middlesex from forcing a win on the final day against Essex at Chelmsford.

No play was possible until mid way through the afternoon, at which point the hosts began on 79-2 chasing an unlikely 415 for victory.

Cook shared in stands of 50 with Matt Walker (19) and 55 with Mark Pettini (21) as Essex closed on 159-4.

Steven Finn had Walker caught by David Nash to finish with figures of 3-67.
