Mike Yardy hit the 13th first-class century of his career at Headingley

A bold Yorkshire declaration produced a thrilling climax to their Championship match against Sussex at Headingley, but the game still ended in a draw.

In a positive move to get a first win of the season, Yorkshire declared on 272-7, setting the visitors 281 for victory off a generous 71 overs.

They appeared to be cruising thanks to skipper Mike Yardy's gritty century.

But, after he departed for 110 off 162 balls, the game swung Yorkshire's way to leave Sussex hanging on at 252-8.

The chase was then called off, as Ollie Rayner and Cory Collymore held out against the pace of former team-mate Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and the left-arm spin of David Wainwright.

Although Sussex looked the likely winners for much of the time, Yorkshire could have clinched it in the end if they had not put down four fairly sharp catches.

And a further blow was the loss of Michael Vaughan, the former England captain being forced to leave the field with soreness in his troublesome right knee.

Vaughan underwent ice-pack treatment and as a precaution and is expected to miss Yorkshire's Championship match against Somerset which begins at Headingley on Thursday.

He will do knee-strengthening work with Yorkshire physiotherapist, Scott McAllister.
