COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Headingley 6-9 June (Play starts 1100 BST) CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY THREE: Yorkshire 225 & 152-2, Sussex 217 (Sussex 4pts, Yorks 4pts)
Rudolph struck 12 fours in his unbeaten 86 |
Jacques Rudolph's unbeaten 86 helped Yorkshire build a 160-run lead against Sussex on day three at Headingley. Rudolph shared 83 for the second wicket with Michael Vaughan (39) as the hosts closed on 152-2. Earlier, Ed Joyce made 100 not out as the visitors were bowled out for 217 after resuming the day on 78-3. Off-spinner Azeem Rafiq took 3-34 on his first-class debut, while Tim Bresnan, Deon Kruis and Rana Naved ul-Hasan all picked up two wickets. Rafiq, who's only other senior appearance resulted in the controversy that led to Yorkshire going out of the 2008 Twenty20 Cup, picked up the wicket of Robin Martin-Jenkins with the fourth ball of his first over. Martin-Jenkins (33) was bowled to end a seventh-wicket partnership of 56 with Joyce. Rafiq then removed Ollie Rayner and Corey Collymore to leave Joyce to complete his 225-ball century in the company of last man Jason Lewry, who was bowled by Naved off the next delivery. Rudolph and Joe Sayers (15) then shared an opening stand of 67 before Sayers was trapped lbw by Collymore. The 17-over partnership between Vaughan and Rudolph took the hosts to 150 before the former England captain was caught by Matt Prior off the bowling of Dwayne Smith. Captain Anthony McGrath then joined Rudolph, whose 139-ball innings contained 12 fours, to see Yorkshire through to the close.
