COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Headingley Yorkshire v Sussex 6-9 June (Play starts 1100 BST) CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Yorkshire 58-2
Time is running out for Vaughan in his bid to earn a Test recall for the Ashes |
Sussex's Corey Collymore dented Michael Vaughan's hopes of winning his England place back for the Ashes by dismissing him for a fourth-ball duck. On a rain-reduced first day of the Championship match at Headingley, the ex-England Test captain edged the West Indian paceman to Ollie Rayner at slip. The same combination also accounted for Jacques Rudolph as Yorkshire reached 58-2 before bad light stopped play. The match did not get underway until 1610 BST because of heavy rain. When it did it was a surprise that captain Anthony McGrath elected to bat after winning the toss. Collymore and Jason Lewry got plenty of movement in the bowler-friendly conditions. And after twice being struck for four by Rudolph, Collymore got his revenge when he moved one away from the South African and found the outside edge to dismiss him for 15. Another excellent ball accounted for Vaughan in his next over to leave Yorkshire 19-2. McGrath (24 not out) and Joseph Sayers (15 not out) steadied the ship and saw Yorkshire to 58-2 before bad light brought a premature end to the day with seven overs left. Yorkshire included 18-year-old off-spinner Azeem Rafiq in their side after Matthew Hoggard was taken ill.
