Carberry hit a useful 72 as Hampshire played out the draw |
Hampshire and Sussex played out a dull draw at the Rose Bowl after the hosts were left no time to set a run target. After bowling Sussex out for 336, Hampshire enjoyed a century partnership from Michael Carberry and James Adams as a rare highlight of the final day. But with just a 14-run lead in their second innings they were forced to bat through the final two sessions. Earlier Sussex wicketkeeper Matt Prior did his England hopes a power of good with a knock of 140. And batsman Damien Wright ground onto 42 to earn Sussex batting bonus points. Sussex resumed on 230-6 in reply to Hampshire's first innings total of 350-8 declared, and went on to make 336 with wicketkeeper Matt Prior scoring 140. First to go was Robin Martin-Jenkins, who edged a delivery from former Sussex bowler Billy Taylor to wicketkeeper Nick Pothas for 16. Taylor, who had only been playing one-day matches for Hampshire, celebrated his first Championship wicket for almost three years. England man Prior's six-hour vigil came to an end at 281 when he was bowled by a swinging delivery from left-armer James Tomlinson. Prior had come in with Sussex in some trouble at 46-3 and guided them to safety in an innings which came off 195 balls and included 10 fours. Damien Wright struck a six and four fours in a breezy 42 before Hampshire at last gave spin bowler Liam Dawson a chance to make his mark. Dawson did so immediately, having Wright caught at the wicket in his first over and then in his next having Ragheb Aga lbw for 24. Dawson finished with two for three and there were three wickets each for Dominic Cork and Tomlinson. | MICHAEL CARBERRY Born: September 29, 1980, Croydon, Surrey Carberry was called up to the England Lions squad to tour New Zealand in 2008 He scored 91 runs in his first innings of his first match |
Hampshire made no effort to hurry along the score when they began their second innings. Carberry and Adams took the score to 126 in 48 overs before they were parted when left-arm spinner Chris Nash had Carberry lbw for 72 in an innings made off 142 balls and including seven fours. Michael Lumb, who was out twice without scoring on his previous match at the Rose Bowl, was out for nought again at 127, bowled by Rory Hamilton-Brown. Hampshire's captain Pothas declared at the first available opportunity at 127-2 in the 50th over, by which time his team were 141 ahead. Adams was unbeaten with 55, his second half-century of the match, and although Sussex captain Mike Yardy used seven bowlers, none of them looked dangerous.
