COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, The Swalec Stadium Day four: Glamorgan 248 & 355 lost to Warwickshire 421 & 183-5 by five wickets Points: Warwickshire 22, Glamorgan 3
Career-best figures from teenager Chris Woakes helped Warwickshire to a five-wicket win over Glamorgan and top spot in Division Two in Cardiff. The 19-year-old took 5-59 as Glamorgan were bowled out for 355 in their second innings to leave the visitors a victory target of 183 in 50 overs. And stand-in skipper Ian Westwood followed his first-innings 176 with 58 to inspire the visitors to victory. Michael Powell also struck 55 as they won with 4.3 overs to spare. It condemned the Welsh county to their third consecutive defeat, though the loss looked like being even more emphatic at the start of the day. Jamie Dalrymple and nightwatchman Ryan Watkins resumed the day at the crease with Glamorgan 221-4, an overall lead of 48, but the latter was caught at second slip for 25 to spark a collapse. Woakes took over, taking three wickets for eight runs in only 24 balls, Mark Wallace caught off an inside edge, Alex Wharf trapped lbw and Dalrymple (67) well caught by the diving Ant Botha at second slip. At that stage Glamorgan's lead was only 97, but the state of the contest was changed by Jason Gillespie and Robert Croft, who put on 76 in 22 overs. Gillespie reached his first half-century for Glamorgan in building the hosts' lead, but he edged Woakes to second slip before Croft fired the same bowler straight to mid-off to ensure Warwickshire's target was a gettable one. The visitors did have a mid-innings wobble when they lost Powell, Jonathan Trott and Tony Frost in the space of three overs. But the win was sealed in style with a six from Jim Troughton over mid-wicket off Croft.
