Glamorgan toil against Westwood

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, The Swalec Stadium
Glamorgan 278-4 v Warwickshire

Ian Westwood scored a dogged unbeaten century as Warwickshire enjoyed the better of the first day of the Division Two clash against Glamorgan at Cardiff.

Warwickshire ended the day 278-4, with stand-in skipper Westwood unbeaten on 139, his first ton this season, having batted all day and faced 282 balls.

He put on 119 for the first wicket with Navdeep Poonia (37) and 78 with Jon Trott (43) to frustrate Glamorgan.

Alex Wharf took 2-69 for the visitors, but the day belonged to Westwood.

And with the in-form Tony Frost, fresh form an unbeaten 144 not out against Gloucestershire, also at the crease, the Bears are set for a big total on Saturday.

However, it could have been different had Westwood, on 70, not survived a dropped catch by Robert Croft at first slip off Wharf.

The seamer enjoyed a change of fortune in his next over when he struck twice in the space of four balls to remove Poonia and Michael Powell.

Poonia drove straight at mid-off before Powell was caught low at second slip.

Powell produced an even better catch after tea, diving to his right at first slip to remove Trott off the bowling of Ryan Watkins before off-spinner Croft trapped Jim Troughton law after the batsman had padded up in front.
