Loudon seals win for Warwickshire
County Championship D1, Edgbaston (day three, stumps): Warwickshire 208 & 320-9 dec beat Gloucestershire 118 & 229 by 181 runs
Warwickshire 18 pts, Gloucestershire 3

Alex Loudon
Loudon's promise has been recognised by the England selectors

Alex Loudon justified his selection for England's tour to Pakistan by taking 6-66 to bowl Warwickshire to a 181-run victory over relegated Gloucestershire.

He dismissed night-watchman Steve Kirby and then claimed the last five wickets as the visitors were all out for 229.

Matt Windows carried his bat for 65 not out but could not save them from the 10th defeat of a disappointing summer.

Spinner Loudon brought the game to an end by dismissing Martyn Ball and Jon Lewis in the space of four balls.

The 25-year-old used clever variations to confuse the batsmen, mixing his off-breaks with an occasional doosra.

He turned one between bat and pad to bowl Kirby for 15 after Gloucestershire had begun the final day on 97-2, facing a remote victory target of 411.

Neil Carter picked up the first wicket, knocking back the off stump of debutant Grant Hodnett for 10, and there was a rare success for Jim Troughton when he found a way past Steve Adshead's attempted sweep after he had made 19.

Steve Snell fell to Loudon before lunch as Ian Bell took the catch at short leg and the same combination accounted for Mark Hardinges following the re-start as Gloucestershire's last four wickets went down for 27.

Warwickshire finished fourth in the table despite winning more games than last year when they took the title.

"With a bit more consistency in the middle of the season, we might have been up there again," said Nick Knight, who is stepping down as captain.

Knight was not satisfied with his own form during the season despite hitting nine centuries in the various competitions.

"That may well be a technical thing - it's something I will look at during the winter," added Knight, who is ready to give his full backing to his successor.

"I hope that whoever takes over as captain will feel I can make a contribution in the dressing room and I will certainly be available to give advice if they want it."
