Win delights Powell
Warwickshire skipper Michael Powell
Powell shows the trophy to the Warwickshire supporters
Michael Powell lifted Warwickshire's first trophy for five years as the dominant one-day side of the mid-1990s became the last-ever winners of the B&H Cup.

Powell's own form with the bat has suffered since he took over from Neil Smith last summer, but the team he has helped mould with coach Bob Woolmer came good for him on the big occasion.

"We wanted to bat second and know what we were chasing, but as a unit, I thought we bowled fantastically well and fielded well - 182 was probably 30, 40, even 50 runs short of a par score," said Powell.

"They say the mark of a good captain is a good team , so I'm very fortunate to have one."

After restricting Essex to 181 for eight, it was youngsters Ian Bell and Jim Troughton who lit up Lord's with a sparkling third wicket partnership of 85.

"They were two young lads going out and enjoying themselves. Today, in front of the England captain (Nasser Hussain) and everyone watching, they've proved what quality players they are," Powell commented.

Although Troughton perished for 37, Bell saw it through to the end with an unbeaten 65 which earned him the Man of the Match award.

"We just went out there and tried to play as if it was a normal game. We've played a lot of second team cricket together and under-19 cricket and we're used to batting with each other.

"You just try and put away what you get given," he said.

"I had a little bit of luck today, which helps. Things didn't quite go my way at the start of the year - we had a few tricky wickets - but things turn around, don't they?

Troughton played the most flamboyant shots of the day, hitting eight fours in a 33-ball knock on his first visit to the home of cricket.

"I'm just ecstatic. I got out there and I liked the buzz of the crowd.

"The supporters were brilliant and I just got on with the job."
