Irani offers no excuses
Essex lost their first five wickets with only 61 on the board
Essex opener Darren Robinson returns to the pavilion
Essex captain Ronnie Irani admitted that his side got what they deserved as they suffered a five-wicket defeat by Warwickshire in the B&H Cup final.

It was a big disappointment who have been revitalised this summer following former England captain Graham Gooch's return to the club as head coach.

Irani himself has been in magnificent form with bat and ball and earned a recall to England's one-day squad, but he was unable to inspire his side following the loss of early wickets.

"The batting let us down today, but fair do's to Warwickshire, they stuck in there and performed well in the final.

Sharing a joke with Warwickshire's Ashley Giles
Irani only managed nine runs with the bat

"It's disappointing for us as well because we've played superb up to this game," he commented..

There was a glimmer of hope when they removed Michael Powell and Nick Knight to reduce Warwickshire to 21 for two.

But Irani admitted: "In the back of the mind - it was a good pitch - we knew we didn't have enough runs on the board. The young lad Bell did well and the left-hander (Jim Troughton) gave us a spanking, so all the best to them in the future."

He insisted there was plenty to come from his team despite letting the chance of their first one-day trophy since winning the B&H Cup in 1998 slip away.

"We've got a young side and I said to every one of them 'Take this experience away, learn from it, be disappointed, but come back strong.'"
