West Indies could only add another 110 runs to their first-day total to reach 244-5 at stumps on a rain-affected second day against Sri Lanka in Kandy.

Resuming on 134-2, Darren Bravo added five runs to his score before he was trapped lbw by Dilhara Fernando for 68.

But Shivnarine Chanderpaul (54) and Brendan Nash (62 no) steadied the ship before two wickets fell in only nine overs between lunch and tea.

Chanderpaul and Dwayne Bravo (0) were the victims as rain curtailed the day.

The two dismissals soured what was a productive morning session with Chanderpaul and Nash eventually producing a stand of 99 between them.

But after the West Indies left-hander successfully challenged an lbw decision to chalk up his 55th Test half-century, he was caught well after lunch by Mahela Jayawardene at slip off Ajantha Mendis.

Bravo then only lasted seven balls when he beaten by Rangana Herath's flight and was stumped by wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene.

With the momentum swinging Sri Lanka's way, Carlton Baugh and Nash did well to survive but the hosts were frustrated as the rain began to fall. No further play was possible after tea with only 41 overs completed.

Both teams will hope to avoid a stalemate after already drawing the two previous Test matches.
