The view from the Lord's pavilion |
York Senior League side Sessay are through to the final of the Village Cricket Cup at Lord's after beating Fillongley of Warwickshire by 65 runs. Sessay posted 183-9 and, although the hosts recovered from losing three quick wickets, dismissed Fillongley for 118. Secretary Keith Houlston, who captained the side in the 1976 final, told BBC Radio York: "We've won eight games to get there, it's a great achievement. "It will make a wonderful climax to the season, that's for sure." As is often the case with cup finalists, Sessay had some close games in the early rounds. | It would mean everything if we could take the cup Sessay secretary Keith Houlston |
"We came within one ball of losing to Staithes in the first game we played," Houlston added. "We also beat Ebberston off the last ball of the game, so we've twice been one ball from going out of the competition, so maybe it's our year." Sessay then saw off York Senior League rivals and Lord's regulars Woodhouse Grange in the quarter-finals. "Woodhouse are the best team we've played in the competition by far, it was a massive effort to beat them," he added. Sessay lost narrowly to Cornwall side Troon at Lord's 34 years ago and Houlston hopes they can now go one better. "It would mean everything if we could take the cup, but we'll have to wait and see," he said.
