National Village Cricket Cup champions Woodhouse Grange have reached the semi-finals of this year's competition. The Yorkshire outfit beat Castle Eden in the quarter-finals with the last ball of the game. Fixture secretary Kevin Smith told BBC Radio York: "Last year's quarter-final against Houghton Main was extremely tight, scraping it by two wickets. "This time it was because we faced 15 less balls in our innings than the opposition - scores and wickets level." He added: "The opposition could have won it if they'd managed to keep their 10th wicket intact. "Our most experienced bowler Paul Grewer got the wicket with a caught and bowled off the last ball and we won it via the rule book." | If we manage to get back and pull off another victory it would be a major milestone in the competition, never mind just in Woodhouse's history Woodhouse Grange official Kevin Smith |
Woodhouse Grange, who play in the York Senior League, beat Findon from Worthing by six wickets in last year's final and Smith said their side had not changed much since that win. "The only difference is a little addition of youth by the fact that David Suddaby who was 12th man in the final has now been playing regularly." The club has been to Lord's for the final three times before and won both in 2007 and in 1995, and Smith said a third win would be incredible. "We've been there three times before, we've won it twice. There's only a couple of other clubs that have ever managed three wins. "So if we manage to get back and pull off another victory it would be a major milestone in the competition, never mind just in Woodhouse's history." Woodhouse Grange now play Woodhouse from south Manchester in the semi-final on 10 August.
