Second Test, day three, St Kitts (close): South Africa 543-6 dec v West Indies 424-4 Match scorecard
Nash (l) and Chanderpaul led the Windies' resistance |
Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Brendan Nash led a West Indies fightback with a 220-run partnership as they reached 424-4 to trail South Africa by 119 runs. The Windies, resuming on 86-1, looked in trouble when Chris Gayle was bowled out by Morne Morkel after adding only eight runs to his overnight 42. But Nash (114) and Chanderpaul then took control - the latter ending day three unbeaten on 151. South Africa lead the three-Test series 1-0, after a 163-run win last Sunday. Following a delayed start due to a wet outfield, it looked ominous for the Windies when their captain Gayle inside-edged to stumps as he attempted a big cover drive off a Morne Morkel delivery. | 606: DEBATE |
Narsingh Deonarine lasted a little longer than Gayle, but after surviving a Hashim Amla drop off Jacques Kallis, the left-hander went too hard at a Dale Steyn delivery and chopped onto his stumps to go for 65. Nash and Chanderpaul, though, upped the pace to neutralise the Proteas' attack with their tons and ease past the follow-on mark. Nash, though, will have been disappointed with the lapse in concentration that ended his second Test century. The 32-year-old Australia-born left-hander set off after cutting to backward point only to turn back as AB de Villiers leaped to catch the bouncing ball before hitting the target. Dwayne Bravo (22) succeeded Nash, ably adding an unbeaten 53 with Chanderpaul as the Windies maintained their solid defence.
