First Test, day three, Port of Spain: S Africa 352 & 155-2 v West Indies 102 Match scorecard South Africa celebrate the dismissal of Windies captain Chris Gayle
West Indies ended day three of the first Test in Trinidad in deep trouble following some devastating pace bowling from Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn. The South Africa new-ball pair shared nine wickets as West Indies were hustled out for just 102 in 47.1 overs. With a lead of 250, Graeme Smith could have enforced the follow-on before tea. Instead, he opted for some batting, and ended the day unbeaten on 77 as South Africa closed on 155-2 - with what could already by a winning lead of 405. In just about every respect, it had been as one-sided a day's cricket as one could imagine after the first two days had provided a competitive contest. With only 34 overs available on day one, it took until stumps on Friday for South Africa's first innings to be brought to an end, on a solid enough total of 352. On Saturday morning, there was enough pace in the wicket to interest Morkel and Steyn. And it was the former who triggered the Windies demise when Travis Dowlin nicked to slip. | 606: DEBATE |
Short-pitched balls caused the greatest problems as Chris Gayle bottom-edged a pull onto his stumps after Brendan Nash had gloved one behind - and Morkel had all three in a lunch score of 65-3. Having been 12-3, left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Narsingh Deonarine began a recovery operation. But after lunch West Indies shockingly lost eight wickets for the addition of just four runs, crashing from 71-3 to 75-9. Chanderpaul gloved Steyn down the leg-side and Bravo ducked into a short one that looped to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, giving Morkel his fourth wicket. Then it was all Steyn, who bowled three left-handers from around the wicket, two choosing to play no shot, and had Shane Shillingford lbw as well. Jacques Kallis removed last man Nelon Pascal, and that was that. Deonarine was the top-scorer with 29 but it had not been a good enough effort from any of the Windies batsmen. With Steyn taking 5-29 and Morkel 4-19 it was West Indies' poorest score against South Africa in Test cricket. Smith and Alviro Peterson put on 56 from 16 overs as the tourists began to build their lead methodically, and although Hashim Amla added just five runs to South Africa's total, Smith was concentrating well on a pitch offering uneven bounce. He and Kallis (42 not out) then took the game further beyond West Indies with a dogged unbeaten stand of 76.
