West Indies had their slow bowlers to thank as they dismissed South Africa for 352 before the close of play on day two of the first Test in Port of Spain.

Top scorer Mark Boucher (69) was the last man out when he was caught off Dwayne Bravo, becoming the only man to fall to a pace bowler in the innings.

Sulieman Benn's haul of 5-120 did most of the damage, with debutant Shane Shillingford taking 3-96.

But the visitors will feel they got off the hook after rallying from 107-5.

Opening bowlers Benn and Shillingford made early inroads as they picked off South Africa's nightwatchman Paul Harris (10) and Jacques Kallis (28) in the opening overs.

Shillingford caught Harris off the bowling of Benn before doing more damage as a bowler, trapping Kallis leg before wicket.

But the Windies pacemen failed to build on the good start given them by their slower team-mates, as Ashwell Prince and AB de Villiers calmed South African nerves with a 122-run stand for the sixth wicket.

Both had passed the 50 mark and looked well on the way to higher scores before West Indies captain Chris Gayle took the ball midway through the afternoon for only one over.

Gayle drew instant reward, tempting Prince to turn an angled drive into the hands of slip Travis Dowlin for 57, then Benn followed this up as he claimed the scalp of De Villiers for 68 when he edged the ball to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin.

Boucher and Dale Steyn stemmed the flow, adding 96 more runs to the visitors' total.

Steyn thumped two sixes before he raced down the pitch to Benn once too often, failed to connect with the ball and was stumped for 39.

Benn's fifth victim was Morne Morkel, bowled for two, and right at the close, Boucher holed out to Nelon Pascal on the long-off boundary.
