First one-day international, Antigua: S Africa 280-7 (48 ovs) bt West Indies 215 (44.1 ovs) by 66 runs (D/L) Match scorecard Amla and De Villiers put on 129 runs in a third-wicket partnership
Centuries from Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers helped South Africa to a 66-run D/L run win over West Indies in the first one-day international in Antigua. Fresh from a 2-0 Twenty20 series triumph, the tourists were put into bat and made 280-7 in a match reduced to 48 overs a side due to rain. Amla and De Villiers both hit 102 while Dwayne Bravo finished with 3-40. And, despite Chris Gayle (45) getting the home side's reply off to a fine start, they were dismissed for 215. Both teams travel to Trinidad for the second of five one-day internationals on Monday. After winning the toss and electing to bowl first at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, West Indies captain Chris Gayle saw South Africa build their total around a solid 129-run third-wicket stand between Amla and De Villiers. Amla hit eight boundaries in his 109-ball knock, while De Villiers cleared the ropes twice with two sixes, along with five fours. South Africa debutant David Miller, who helped his side to a tense one-run win in the second Twenty20 on Thursday, made an impressive start to his one-day international career, smashing a quick-fire 23 runs from 16 deliveries. The home side's response began badly when opener Andre Fletcher was dismissed in the third over. But Gayle was in a typically belligerent mood, crashing eight boundaries before he was caught at midwicket by Johan Botha following a miscued pull shot. Ramnaresh Sarwan (38) and Narsingh Deonarine (26) tried to consolidate but both men fell in quick succession to leave the hosts 140-4. A musclar innings from Kieron Pollard gave West Indies fresh impetus in the final 15 overs, but his dismissal ended any lingering hopes of victory.
