Kallis helped drive South Africa to a formidable total |
West Indies' poor run in limited-overs cricket continued as they were beaten by 17 runs to go 2-0 down in the five-match series at home to South Africa. Darren Sammy hit a 20-ball half century - the fastest ever by a West Indian - but ran out of partners at the end. Hashim Amla (92) and Jacques Kallis (85) helped South Africa to 300-5. The Windies chase misfired early on until Sammy smashed 58 from 24 balls, but he was left stranded when the last wicket fell with 11 balls to go. Meanwhile, officials may be forced to relocate the final one-day international and first Test against South Africa because of violence in the Jamaica capital of Kingston. Angry mobs set fire to police stations after the government agreed to extradite alleged drugs lord Christopher "Dudus" Coke, the 41-year-old reputed leader of the infamous Shower Posse gang, to the US. The West Indies Cricket Board said it was "closely monitoring the situation on the ground." The Jamaica ODI is scheduled for 3 June at Sabina Park, with the Test due to begin seven days later. | 606: DEBATE |
In Monday's match, Proteas skipper Graeme Smith won the toss and elected to bat first. Amla laid the platform in big stands with Smith and Kallis before AB de Villiers (41) and David Miller (26 not out), both scoring at better than a run a ball, provided the final acceleration. Kieron Pollard (2-39) emerged with the best of some moderate West Indies bowling figures. Dale Richards replaced Andre Fletcher at the top of the batting order, but neither he nor opening partner Chris Gayle gave the hosts any early impetus. Ramnaresh Sarwan's innings was interrupted by a worrying injury - he made just six - and despite Dwayne Bravo's excellent knock of 74, South Africa remained in charge of affairs. Sammy, ludicrously batting down at number nine, fired three sixes off Dale Steyn, two off Johan Botha and one off Morne Morkel to set up a thrilling finish. Batting deep in his crease to hit full-length deliveries up and over the men in the deep on the on-side, he had Smith and the South Africans worried. But with only tail-enders for company, it remained a tough task for Sammy. The 48th over, bowled by Ryan McLaren, proved key. It cost just five runs and the bowler coolly ran out Windies number 10 Ravi Rampaul from the last ball. Now the injured Nikita Miller, batting with Pollard as his runner, faced the first ball of the 49th over with 18 needed. Trying to get Sammy back on strike, Pollard was run out by Smith's backhanded flick and South Africa celebrated wildly. "Credit must go to Sammy for giving us some hope," said home skipper Gayle. "The middle period was our downfall - too many dot balls. We put pressure on ourselves in the middle and it's going to make it difficult for the batters coming in to try and get 10 runs an over, so we need to try and work on that."
