Hashim Amla struck a stunning 129 off 115 balls as South Africa defeated the West Indies off the last ball in the fourth one-day international.

The hosts looked set to win their first game in the series when their balanced innings left South Africa chasing 304.

But Hamla's ton and some inept Windies fielding eventually allowed AB de Villiers (57) to hit the winning run off the last for a seven-wicket win.

The tourists can now complete a whitewash in Port of Spain on Thursday.

"I am very disappointed with a few bowlers," said a furious Windies captain Chris Gayle.

"When I asked them to do something they can't actually do it . It doesn't make sense having them in the team."

Proteas skipper Graeme Smith, meanwhile, heaped praise on man-of-the-match Amla.

"It was a great effort to chase 300. Hashim's was an incredible innings and he takes the credit for the run chase," said Smith.

"We maybe got a bit conservative in the last over but it was still a good chase."
