Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers both hit centuries as South Africa strengthened their position on day two of the second Test against West Indies.

Kallis was dismissed for 110 and De Villiers was unbeaten on 135 - his 10th Test century - as South Africa declared on 543-6 in St Kitts.

Their centuries followed captain Graeme Smith's 132 on the opening day.

In reply, the West Indies recovered from the early departure of Travis Dowlin to finish on 86-1.

Kallis and De Villiers began the day on 45 and seven respectively as the Proteas built on their overnight score of 295-3.

Kallis reached his 35th hundred from 217 balls when he cut Sulieman Benn through backward point for the 11th of his 12 fours.

He also struck one six from 227 balls in close to seven hours before he was caught at deep square-leg off Shane Shillingford, who had also claimed the wickets of Alviro Petersen and Hashim Amla on the opening day.

He passed the 11,000 Test run mark when he hit a drive off Ravi Rampaul through wide mid-on to join Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting, Rahul Dravid and Allan Border in an elite group of players to have achieved the feat.

De Villiers battled through with an upset tummy, which required him to leave the field for an unscheduled bathroom break but he notched up his hundred, which came from 130 balls, with a stylish six.

After Kallis was removed, South Africa then lost left-hander Ashwell Prince at mid-wicket off Benn for nine, and Mark Boucher was run out for 17, when he failed to beat fine-leg fielder Brendan Nash's direct hit at the striker's end going for a single.

Dale Steyn came to the crease and he and De Villiers added 54 before South Africa declared.

It put the pressure on the West Indies, who lost the first Test in Port of Spain within four days and they still face a tough task to avoid the follow-on.

Dowlin departed for 10 when he edged a lifting delivery from Morne Morkel to third slip, where De Villiers took a diving catch

But Chris Gayle (42 not out) and Narsingh Deonarine (33 not out) held firm in the last session of the day.
