Saints battle home to remain top

Cricket

Northampton Saints battled to a two-wicket victory over Old Northamptonians to keep top spot in the Hevey Northants League's Premier Division.

Saints dismissed their local rivals for only 121 but then lost eight batsmen in knocking off the runs.

Second-placed Finedon enjoyed a more comfortable victory, beating bottom club Desborough by eight wickets.

And Peterborough Town remained in third spot courtesy of a six-wicket success at home to Brixworth.

The day's other winners were Burton Latimer who saw off Rushton by 36 runs to move up to fifth place, while centuries from Wollaston's Nick Shelton and Mohammad Hussain of Rushden were the individual highlights in a draw between the two sides at Short Stocks.

David Ripley's Northamptonshire Academy side continued the defence of their title by holding on for a draw against Stony Stratford, closing on 233-9 in search of 254 to win.
