Oswestry start with first-day win

Shropshire Premier cricket league

Oswestry put last summer's Birmingham League relegation behind them with a four-wicket win at Shelton on the opening day of the new cricket season.

A five-wicket haul for Simon Whalley restricted Shelton to 120 all out.

In reply, Oswestry reached their target for the loss of six wickets to register 21 points.

Oswestry dropped back into the Shropshire Premier League after finishing bottom of Birmingham League Division Three in 2008.

Last season's Shropshire champions Reman Services are still playing their cricket in the county after rejecting the chance to apply for promotion to the Birmingham League.

They managed a winning draw in their first game against Ludlow.

Skipper Mal Serplet top scored with 26 as Reman reached 141.

Ludlow were then left hanging on in reply on 124-9, Reman's Dom Bradburne taking three wickets.

Quatt (147-9) beat Madeley (144-9) by one wicket.

Carl Jones top scored with an unbeaten 61 despite a fine bowling spell from Madeley's John Lloyd (4-40).

Allscott's Chris Starling (3-26) and Christian Starling (3-27) starred in their side's seven-wicket win at Newtown.

After restricting the home side to 114, Carl Starling then top scored with an unbeaten 60, backed by 39 from Andy Withington, as Allscott breezed to victory inside 26 overs.

Wem posted the day's highest score in the league, running up 210-4 en route to a 66-run win at Broseley.

Andy Ollerenshaw (6-45) claimed the man of the match award as Broseley were bowled out for 144.

Albrighton enjoyed a successful run chase in their three-wicket win at home to Bomere Heath.

After Shivraj Singh Khenwar (53) and Ian Gillespie had put on 98 for the first wicket, Heath folded to 157 all out.

Gareth Hughes then hit 45, backed by Paul Read's 33, as Albrighton squeezed home.

Much Wenlock's home match against Welshpool was abandoned, both sides getting five points.
