Champions Workington retain title

Cricket

Workington have retained the North Lancashire and Cumbria Premier Division Championship following a one-wicket win over Penrith on Saturday.

In a thrilling match, Workington were set a target of 160 to win and inched their way to victory with a single wicket to spare.

Cleator eased into second place following their nine-wicket dismantling of strugglers Cockermouth.

The visitors bowled Cockermouth out for 127 before racing to their target.

James Quint was in rich form for Dalton, smashing 116 in their 101-run defeat of Millom.

Dalton made 226-8, setting a massive target which Millom spectacularly failed to meet.

Keswick hammered 206-8 from their innings against Furness, but could only manage a winning draw after the hosts held on at 179-9 in reply.

LEAGUE TABLE
1: Workington - 308 pts [C]
2: Cleator - 287 pts
3: Millom - 255 pts
Duddon secured a 28-run win over Carlisle despite making an unspectacular total of 129-9.

But thanks to a phenomenal spell of bowling from fast bowler Gary Stevenson (4-8) Carlisle were sent packing for just 101 all out.

Whitehaven's match with Haverigg was postponed in controversial circumstances.

Prior to the match the umpires decided that a part of the outfield was waterlogged and could be dangerous for fielders in that area.

To enable play to start, the umpires decided to alter the boundary to exclude the waterlogged area, shortening it in that area.

The umpires told both teams the game could now be played and while Haverigg agreed to play, Whitehaven refused.

A decision will be made by the League Committee once they have considered the situation.
