Cheema inspires Cornwood to third

Cheema's injury to his fifth metatarsal nearly ended his career

Cornwood's overseas player Aizaz Cheema has been in devastating form this season and helped the South Hams team to reach third in Devon's A Division.

The 28-year-old all-rounder just missed out on selection for the Pakistan national team before a foot injury almost ended his career two years ago.

"I am lucky to still be playing as the doctors said I may never play again," he told BBC Radio Devon.

The Punjab-born player made his first class debut back in 2001.

"I was very close to playing for Pakistan last season but unfortunately couldn't make it," he said.

Cheema returns to Pakistan at the beginning of September to prepare for the new season with Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) but in the meantime he is relishing his time in Devon.

"I am enjoying my time here a lot," he added. "I am feeling at home."

Although it is now unlikely that Cornwood will get promoted to the Devon Premier Division this season the foundations are set to leave them in good stead for future success.
