Shrewsbury take title initiative

Shropshire club cricket

A 218-run partnership between Dan Reece (110) and Rees O'Connell (96) guided in-form Shrewsbury to the top of the Birmingham League First Division.

The pair helped Shrewsbury post an impressive 274-7 batting first.

O'Connell then took centre stage with the ball, taking three wickets as promotion rivals Stratford crumbled to just 115 all out in reply.

Wellington could make a late promotion bid too, after Adam Byram's 5-27 helped them to victory over Cannock.

James Ralph's 101 was unable to prevent Shifnal slipping into serious relegation trouble as Saturday's defeat by West Bromwich Dartmouth left them the bottom of the Premier Division.

In Division Two, Newport were dismissed by Evesham for just 136, but Pat Davenport (4-29) and Priyadarshana Rasike (4-66) made a fight of it before Evesham eventually crept home by two wickets.

Over 500 runs were scored at St Georges where Old Elizabethans raced to 265-7 batting first.

Hitshu Bachani took four wickets for St Georges, who replied with a brave 241-9, thanks to 98 from Chris Miller.

Out-of-luck Oswestry are now bottom of the Third Division and looking odds-on for relegation back to the Shropshire League after defeat by Brockhampton.

Alex Huxley (106) and Warrick Fynn (96) took Oswestry to an impressive 265-7, but Brockhampton squeezed home by three wickets.

Andy Leather took 4-41 for Bridgnorth as they limited Lichfield to 158, but they were then dismissed themselves for 136, despite Ian Gregory's 41.

Maisam Hasnain hit 108 for Whitchurch to set up a seven-wicket win over Olton.

In the Shropshire Premier League victorious Reman's pulled clear of second-placed Albrighton, who were held to a draw by Newtown.

Reman's beat Ludlow by three wickets, responding to a 155 total (Tom Stanley 60) with 156-7 (Wendell Wagner 75 no).

Albrighton made 199-7 against Newtown, Gareth Hughes unbeaten on 72 and Matthew Wright making 71, but the border side held on at 253-8 (Darren Grant 71, Mark Bissell 5-44).

Much Wenlock climbed off the bottom of the table, dumping Broseley there instead.

Broseley made 122, but Wenlock responded with 123-3, Stuart Walters not out on 71.

Shelton crashed to just 33 all out against Wem, Cameron Rope and Stuart Raine both taking five wickets. Wem then cruised to 36-1 to seal an easy victory

Quatt beat Welshpool by 143 runs, while Madeley and Bomere Heath played out a high-scoring draw.

Steve Jones hit an unbeaten 136 in Madeley's 262-5, but Ian Gillespie's 86 helped Bomere Heath to 229-7.
