Andy Gray took seven wickets for Shropshire in the match |
Jono Whitney hit an unbeaten 94 as Shropshire cruised to an eight-wicket win over Herefordshire at Shifnal. Resuming at 3-1, needing a further 156 for victory, Whitney shone on his home ground, supported by 55 from Knowle and Dorridge batsman Attiq-ur-Rehman. The pair put on a match-winning century stand to help extend Herefordshire's long run without a Championship win. Shropshire's next match is against Cornwall at Truro on 22 June, when Hereford play Dorset at Brockhampton. Shropshire owed their victory to several key individual performances. Captain James Ralph led from the front, hitting 74 as the home side opened up a crucial 98-run first innings lead. And off spinner Andy Gray took seven wickets in the match. Despite Herefordshire improving on their first innings 134 to post 256 second time around, Shropshire were always expected to reach their target. And, although the visitors did capture the wicket of new Shropshire professional John Maunders on Monday night, they were only to claim one more scalp on Tuesday morning as Shropshire got home on 160-2.
