Win keeps Shropshire in the hunt

Shropshire's Minor Counties Trophy win over Bedfordshire on Sunday left them relying on other results to qualify for the competition's quarter-finals.

Their six-wicket victory put them top of the group table, but they sit out the final round of games on 1 June.

Duncan Catterall and Mark Robinson took three wickets each to restrict the visitors to 137 runs.

In reply, professional John Maunders hit 62 and Catterall made 39 not out as Shropshire reached 139-4 in 34 overs.

"We bowled and batted well in a game we knew we had to win," county secretary Neville Birch told BBC Radio Shropshire.

But he cannot be sure his team will make the knock-out stages.

"It's very tight, and will go right down to the wire in the final fixtures," Birch added.

"One thing in our favour is that we have a positive run-rate - better than second-placed Cheshire - but frustratingly all we can do is sit back and wait for the two final group matches to take place."

Shropshire lie top-of-the-table with five points from four matches.

Second-placed Cheshire are a point behind, having played three games.

Cheshire face fourth-placed Cumberland on 1 June.
